View The Facebook Image Gallery We crave it like addicts. We long for it like lovers. We obsess until the process overtakes us and and we just. can’t. quit. Accidental Obsessions opens Friday, August 4 at Ciel Gallery, and features the work of Jean Cauthen, Pam Goode, Laura McRae Hitchcock and Marianne Huebner.
Artists have a long history of marrying obsession to creation, often culminating in bodies of work that both delight and slightly mystify viewers.
"I remember a long ago Christmas catalogue," says Jean Cauthen, an oil painter. "The ink was garishly saturated, the items too small and rush-hour-congested on thin pages. Breaking every rule of design, there was no visual ‘resting place’ from the frenetic. It was simply delicious, and I couldn’t get enough of its magic."
"Years later, I find myself compelled to congest canvases with thousands of shapes in unlikely combinations of color. These puzzle pieces find form as trees, stacks of playing cards or glowing chandeliers. In this chaos, I work to convey order, with the goal that harmony, meaning and maybe a glimpse of magic might emerge.”
