Jackie Radford is a book binder and book artist born in Alabama and raised in North Carolina. Radford’s exploration of the book as an art form was inspired by her time at Penland School of Craft where she studied sewn bindings. A sewn binding must securely attach the text block to the cover. Radford pushed the linear binding form into more organic shapes while still maintaining the structure of the book. A study of Coptic and Medieval style bindings followed. A use of formal structures with informal materials allows Radford’s work to appeal to a varied audience.
